When we travel, I often find that it’s the stops at local, small businesses that I tend to enjoy the most. When it comes to local places to eat, I have learned that if it has the name of a fruit in it then you better try it out! After stopping for lunch at The Tomato Place, I can safely say that my theory still holds true.
On a recent road trip with our family of five, we were traveling through Mississippi and I read about a place on TripAdvisor just off our route on U.S. Highway 61 outside of Vicksburg, Mississippi called The Tomato Place. I tend to be a creature of habit and I like to eat lunch around 11:00. I don’t usually eat much of a breakfast, maybe a granola bar or a pack of crackers, and I am not a coffee drinker so my daily dose of caffeine comes with my Mt. Dew at lunch. So, once 11:00 rolls around I tend to get a little “hangry”. By this time I am ready for my dose of caffeine and something to eat. Based on our location, our ETA was going to be closer to 12:00 before we arrived but based on the reviews I was willing to wait.
When we pulled up, our kids begin to question why we pulled up to what looked to be an old produce stand/shack on the side of the highway. I told them we were stopping for lunch to which my youngest replied, “this doesn’t look like Chick-fil-a!”
The Tomato Place is a Caribbean/New Orleans-themed “funky little shack” hidden under the guise of a roadside produce stand. It has a full menu including salads, signature sandwiches and po’boys, and lunches featuring in-season vegetable sides. You can add Fresh-squeezed lemonade, iced tea and blended fruit smoothies to your lunch as well.
On this day, I went with the club sandwich, Mary Ila decided on the fried green tomato BLT, Andrew & Paige had grilled cheeses, and Sam went with his usual Mac & Cheese. The food was fresh and delicious, the service was excellent, and the décor was unique. From the freshly planted flowers to the license plate signage everything was done in an original way.

If you are ever in the Vicksburg, Mississippi area, I would suggest making a stop at the The Tomato Place. From the décor, to the food, to the people we encountered, The Tomato Place offered a unique setting that our family will remember for a long time.
