Demo Day: Dumpsters, Crow Bars, Sledge Hammers, and Tetanus Shots

All you need to have a good demo day

When you see Chip Gaines’ excitement over what he has coined “demo day” you might think this is the most fun, and maybe the easiest part of starting a remodel project.

But what do you actually need for a demo to go well?

Dumpsters

You need a place to put all the stuff you are ripping out, and it can’t go on the side of the road to be picked up by your regular garbage pick up.

Prices vary based on the size you need and how long you need it.  We recommend Patriot Jacks.  DM us for Andrew’s number there. He will hook you up with a good price.

Crow Bars and Sledge Hammers

There aren’t really a lot of tools you need to demo. If you’ve got some good crow bars and a good sledge hammer, you should be good to go.

Tetanus Shots

You never know what you are going to find when you demo and when and where you might accidentally take a nail through the foot like I did while demoing last week.   It’s been a while since I had a tetanus shot, so I ran down to a local pharmacy – thanks Bendall’s – and they hooked me up.

Should I demo myself or pay someone to do it?

As we described in the post on the budget for our kitchen remodel, we paid someone to demo and it – along with framing labor – took up over 20% of our labor budget.

In our Greenwood flip, we are doing it ourselves with a little help from family, and given the size of the project, think it will save us substantial money.

If you are planning to save money by demoing yourself, just make sure your tetanus shot is up to date, or go get one!
