Design Series: Turning a Rec Room into a Master Suite

Would you rather a bonus room or bedroom? What if you could have both?

As Paige said, the blue carpet in the sunken rec room at Greenwood House had to go. Well, really, the whole room had to go- or have a major facelift. The floors had to be raised to align with the rest of the house.

An outdoor closet had to be converted to a master closet, walls and ceiling had to be changed, and a master bath added.

Additional Bath and Closets for a Bonus Room or Bedroom

All of this took place to convert the rec room in the Greenwood house to a master suite, taking the home from a 3/2 to a 4/3 home. And, if the family who chooses to live here would still prefer a bonus room over another bedroom, the space- which is just off the kitchen and den- can still be utilized this way.

In designing the space, we decided to add certain features we think the family that will call Greenwood home will love:

  • Hallway separating the den/kitchen from the suite with new french doors opening onto what will be a heated and cooled porch.
  • A toilet room for the master bathroom as well as for guests to use if needed.  The space is separated by a pocket door from the rest of the master bath.
  • Modern double vanity
  • Large tiled walk-in shower
  • Keeping the large windows in the bedroom
  • Adding new fixtures and trim throughout the space
  • Tile floors in the bath and hardwood floors in the bedroom
  • Like the rest of the house, all new HVAC, electrical and plumbing
