Our 1960s Greenwood home had great bones but needed an exterior makeover. According to most sources, exterior updates can recoup anywhere from 5% to 100% of their cost in added home value. Here’s what we tackled—starting with the highest return on investment—and what you might consider if you’re looking to boost curb appeal and equity in your own home:
1. New Roof
Top of the list for ROI? A new roof. We chose Timberline HDZ in Weathered Wood, a shingle color that complemented our updated exterior palette and gave the home a fresh, polished look.
2. Windows & Doors
We added new windows to the back of the house to bring in more natural light and updated both the front and side doors for better aesthetics and energy efficiency. We opted for a composite front door that lets in more light and matched the side door to keep the style consistent. The stain we used: Aged Oak Gel Stain by Minwax.

3. Paint
This brick ranch exterior makeover had to include paint. We gave the exterior a full refresh—painting the brick, trim, shutters, and gutters. We also removed shutters from a few windows that didn’t need them and took off the outdated storm window covers. Here’s the color scheme we chose:
Brick: SW 0037 Morris Room Grey (Duration, Satin)

Trim & Windows: SW 7044 Amazing Gray (Duration, Semi-Gloss)

- Shutters & Gutters: SW 7020 Black Fox (Duration, Semi-Gloss)

4. Landscaping
We kept what was working, gave it a good trim, and then added fresh mulch, edging, and new plants. Varying the size and color of the plants—and playing with the shape of the beds—added dimension and curb appeal to our classic ranch-style facade.

Our Service Providers
A huge shoutout to Jeremy Sandoval and his team at Sandoval Painting & Renovations, who handled both the roofing and painting.
Tip: when hiring painters, make sure pressure washing the house is included in the estimate—it makes all the difference in the final result.
And of course, we couldn’t have done it without our resident plant expert: a generous dad/father-in-law who offered to refresh the landscaping at no cost. Family labor for the win!
We will continue to share updates as the flowers and shrubs flourish through Spring and Summer. Stick around to see the beautiful growth!
