Some renovations give you time to browse, deliberate, and wait for the perfect piece. Others need to get done—and the budget needs to stretch.
When your contractor says they needed you to pick out something, well yesterday, time is of the essence, especially when you’re 300+ miles away. You need something that can be selected and delivered quickly and easily.
For our two-bedroom, one-bath rental renovation, we needed affordable fixtures that could arrive quickly and help the house feel fresh and cohesive. We compared options from Amazon, Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Wayfair. For the fixtures on our list, Amazon won on both price and delivery time.
That doesn’t mean every item on Amazon is a bargain or that it’s always the best place to shop. But for this project, it was where our budget and timeline came together.
What Was on Our Shopping List?
These were the finishing touches we needed:
- Two flush-mount ceiling fixtures
- Kitchen and bathroom cabinet knobs and pulls
- Kitchen faucet
- Bathroom faucet
- Bathroom lighting
- Bathroom mirror
Individually, these purchases might seem small. Together, they can take a meaningful bite out of a renovation budget—and make a big difference in how a home looks and functions.
For a rental, our goal was simple: attractive, practical choices at a price that made sense.
We ordered all of this for less than $350.00.
Compare More Than the Price
A low price only helps if the product works for your space.
As we compared across sites, we looked at dimensions, materials, finishes, and what came in the box. Cabinet hardware might be priced individually or in a multipack. A faucet might include components that another requires you to purchase separately.
Check the details before deciding you’ve found the better deal. For replacement cabinet pulls, measure the distance between the existing screw holes. For faucets, confirm the mounting configuration. For lighting and mirrors, measure the space instead of relying on the product photo.
Those few minutes can save you a return—and a delay.
Read Reviews for Quality and Installation
Pretty pictures are a starting point. Reviews help fill in the rest.
Look for customer photos and repeated comments about durability, finish quality, missing parts, and ease of installation. One unhappy review may not tell the whole story, but the same complaint appearing repeatedly deserves attention.
Installation matters, too. A fixture that costs less upfront can lose its value if it creates extra work for you or your contractor. Clear instructions, included hardware, and reviews describing straightforward installation all belong in the decision.
Make the Pieces Work Together
Shopping on a budget doesn’t mean every choice has to feel disconnected. Coordinate finishes, keep proportions appropriate, and choose a consistent style throughout the house.
For our rental renovation, comparing four retailers helped us feel confident about where to spend. Amazon came out ahead for these fixtures, but the most useful part of the process was doing the homework: compare prices, check the specifications, read the reviews, and confirm delivery dates.
A tight budget and timeline can still leave room for thoughtful choices. Sometimes the right finishing touches are the ones that look good, work well, and arrive when you need them.
