Open-Concept Kitchen Remodel Before and After: Transforming a Dark, Closed-In Space

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and for the Loyd’s-like most families- a lot of their time is spent in the kitchen.

Kitchen Before and After

Before their kitchen renovation, the space was totally different—dark, very small, and incredibly closed-in.

Here is how they opened things up and created a functional, beautiful space for their family and for entertaining:

Opening the Layout

Originally, a wall stopped right where the refrigerator is sitting in the picture here.  This left only a tiny island and a separate breakfast nook. By removing the wall and integrating the nook into the main kitchen, the entire room feels significantly larger.

Connecting to the Outdoors

Accessing the backyard used to require snaking through the bonus room. With kids constantly flying in and out and the backyard totally renovated, the Loyds knew a direct path was needed. Replacing the existing windows with double doors and added outside stairs  created a quick, easy exit to the back.

Dreamy Island

Heather wanted a massive island with no visible cuts in the stone. To achieve this, she researched the largest standard slab size for white quartz and built the island’s dimensions around that. While she considered marble, quartz won out for its lower maintenance.

Golden Fixtures

For the finishing touches, Heather worked with Mel at Kenny Pipe & Supply, who helped source all of their fixtures. She fell in love with a beautiful gold kitchen sink that perfectly matched Pinterest inspiration and flows beautifully with the garden window which is original to the home.

Family-Friendly Appliances

The GE Café line won out for all of their appliances: dishwasher, refrigerator, ice machine, and stove. (We hear GE gives a discount on ordering appliance sets instead of single orders!) A favorite feature is the built-in drawer microwave in the island, which is incredibly easy for the kids to use. Customization of the hardware from the standard rose gold to a another gold fits the aesthetic, tying in with the light fixtures and sink perfectly.

Kitchen remodels are not for the faint of heart, but with a little vision and a lot of patience, the effort pays off for years to come.
